When you are unloading and loading trailers, maintaining a safe path for your pallet trucks, lift trucks or other equipment is a critical consideration. Any device that spans the distance between a loading dock and trailer or the floor has to be strong enough to sustain substantial weight.
There are lots of options out there from many different vendors in Ventura County. While dock levelers are a popular choice, portable dock plates, boards and ramps are more affordable and often more versatile choices. Unlike levelers, these choices can be readily relocated and put into use across numerous dock bays.
Dock plates are used to bridge a gap from one place to another in material handling applications, generally between a dock and a truck. They are constructed as a rectangular slab of metal with a faint curve, and they frequently have a perpendicular safety foot fitted on the bottom that maintains the plate in position during times of use. Dock plates come in either steel or aluminum and can reach weights of up to 17,000 lbs. They are generally configured with a diamond plate pattern for traction.
Dock boards offer a heavier duty alternative for bridging gaps and have curbs fitted on either side, which add bracing to the board and impede lift trucks from slipping over the edges. Dock boards come in both steel and lighter weight aluminum options. Curbs are either bolted or welded on either side. Like dock plates, dock boards generally come equipped with a safety leg and are commonly made with a diamond plate facing.
A yard ramp is basically a portable loading dock. It is a ramp that can be easily relocated within a shipping and receiving yard to allow pallet trucks and lift trucks to climb safely from ground level up to a container or trailer and back. Nearly all yard ramps have a height adjustment mechanism to allow various sizes of containers and trucks.
For buildings without loading docks, yard ramps are crucial for loading and unloading stock from containers and trailers. A secondary application is to permit vehicles to drive into a facility from surface level via a bay door.
Loading Dock Ramps
A dock to ground ramp is beneficial when you have a need to pass compact trucks, vans or forklifts in and out of your warehouse on a regular basis. It's a permanent or semi-permanent ramp that enables vehicle travel from grade level to loading dock elevation.
In contrast to yard ramps, dock to ground ramps are not configured to be relocated frequently, and are installed as a stationary solution. There is also no need for an incline adjustment mechanism, as the ramp remains set in one position.
