When you're loading and unloading trailers, maintaining a safe path for your pallet jacks, lift trucks or other equipment is an important consideration. Any mechanism that spans the gap between a loading dock and trailer or the ground must be strong enough to bear enormous weight.
There are many choices out there from many different vendors in San Bernardino County. Although dock levelers are a popular choice, portable dock plates, boards and ramps are more affordable and sometimes more adaptable possibilities. Unlike dock levelers, these pieces of equipment can be freely moved and re-used across different dock stations.
Dock plates are used to bridge a gap from one place to another in material handling operations, generally between a loading dock and a trailer. They are constructed as a rectangular sheet of metal with a faint bend, and they commonly have a perpendicular safety leg mounted on the underside that holds the plate in position during use. Dock plates are constructed of either steel or aluminum and can uphold weights of up to 17,000 pounds. They are typically made with a diamond plate surface for traction.
Dock boards provide a higher capacity option for spanning gaps and have borders fitted on both sides, which add bracing to the board and prevent lift trucks from slipping over the edges. Dock boards come in both steel and lighter weight aluminum varieties. Curbs are either bolted or welded on either side. Like dock plates, dock boards generally come equipped with a security foot and are commonly made with a diamond plate pattern.
A yard ramp is essentially a mobile loading dock. It is a ramp that can be readily moved around a shipping and receiving yard to allow pallet trucks and lift trucks to climb safely from floor level up to a trailer or container and back. Nearly all yard ramps have a height setting mechanism to accommodate different sizes of containers and trucks.
For facilities that don't have loading docks, yard ramps are crucial for unloading and loading stock from trailers and containers. A secondary application is to allow vehicles to drive into a building from surface level through a bay door.
Loading Dock Ramps
A dock to ground ramp is beneficial when you have occasion to move small trucks, vans or forklifts in and out of your building on a consistent basis. It's a permanent or semi-permanent ramp that enables vehicle travel from grade level to dock elevation.
In contrast to yard ramps, dock to ground ramps are not designed to be moved around frequently, and are intended as a long term alternative. There is also no need for a height adjustment mechanism, as the ramp remains fixed in a single position.
