Helpful Guidelines for Battery Maintenance

Maximize the full potential of your battery

As part of the normal charging process, batteries need water.  Every time a battery nears full charge, the water in the battery will start to separate into its component elements of oxygen and hydrogen.  This gassing is desirable to remix the acid inside the liquid in the battery so the corrosiveness is not concentrated at the bottom of the battery opening the possibilty of damage.

Therefore, the water lost through gassing must be replaced.  There are a variety of ways to replace the water in the battery:

Battery Watering Systems

Here is an example of a battery watering system.  A watering system allows you to water a forklift battery without removing it from the forklift truck.

Through a series of hoses connecting to the battery cells, with float valves to prevent over filling, a watering system replenishes the water in a battery lost through the gassing phase of battery charging.

Blinky - battery low water warning device

low battery water

  • Easy to see and to use: A flashing green light means the electrolyte level is OK; no light means it is time to water the cells.
  • Protects your battery investment: The Blinky helps protect against battery dry-out, a major failure mode for industrial batteries.
  • Improves operator safety: There is no longer any need for maintenance staff to peer into vent wells to check levels.
  • Fits almost all batteries: Blinkys are available with many standard probe lengths, and can also be easily trimmed to any custom length.
  • Engineered to be tough: the Blinky is built to withstand the harsh environment of industrial battery applications. Its materials are resistant to corrosion, and its low profile protects it against damage from battery cables and other hazards. It is designed to last for the life of the battery.
    • Battery Service Stands

Battery service stands are used to allow for rolling the forklift battery out of the forklift for watering or storage while charging.

      Battery Changer - RAYMOND Batt-R-Ease

The RAYMOND Batt-R-Ease and similar pallet truck mounted battery changers allow you to remove the battery for watering and exchange.  Should you have more than one shift and opportunity or fast charging are not suited to your operation, then you will want to have more than one battery per truck available for exchange with a discharged battery.  A battery changer and battery stands will be required.
